Parent Coaching and Consulting
Parenting a child with intense behaviors, sensitivities, high energy, or emotional turbulence can be exhausting, frustrating, and worrisome. Parents often struggle with the question, “at what point do we get help and who do we turn to?” This can be made especially difficult when your child may present as “typical” much of the time, but your intuition is telling you that they (or you) need help. Social Learning Works provides parent coaching to help navigate the child’s needs, create family plans, and determine next steps. To get a better understanding of the types of parents who find parent consultation to be helpful, check out the Our Client page.
We are collaborative in our approach and recognize that parenting styles vary from family to family. Some of the philosophies we pull from include The Whole-Brain Child (Siegel and Bryson), The Nurtured Heart Approach (Glasser and Easley), The Explosive Child (Greene), Positive Discipline (Nelsen, Erwin, Cheryl, et al), and more. While we have the education, knowledge, and experience working with a wide range of children, we recognize that you are the expert on your child. Our goal is to provide you with tools, resources, and hope to restore joy within the family.
Common Parent Consultation Goals:
- Pinpoint challenging areas and “unsolved problems” at home, school, or in the community
- Establish a common language for your family and other adults who spend time with your child
- Advocating for your child at school
- Discover your child’s strengths and create plans for remediation for areas of weakness
- Develop and implement Family Rules
- Answer questions about whether behaviors or development is typical or atypical
- Support smoother daily routines and transitions
- Increase flexibility
- Navigate sibling dynamics
- Establishing boundaries and consistency
- Build relationship and trust with your child
- Determine where to start and provide referrals to appropriate resources (ex: Occupational Therapy, Behavioral Pediatrician, Educational Tutor, etc)

Parent Consultation and Coaching sessions are not couples’ therapy. If during the course of treatment we feel that couples’ therapy would be beneficial, we will make referrals for you to explore. Parent consultations are not appropriate for parents with high conflict.
